If your dog is in distress, contact a vet immediately

This website is for educational purposes only. If your dog is showing signs of illness, injury, or distress, stop reading and call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital right away. Do not use information from this website as a substitute for professional emergency care.

Nature of This Website

SmartDogWellness is an educational website providing general information about dog health, nutrition, behaviour, and care. The content published here — including articles, guides, calculators, tools, and downloadable resources — is intended solely for general educational purposes.

We are not a veterinary practice, animal hospital, or licensed animal health provider. None of the content on this site constitutes veterinary advice, diagnosis, treatment, or a substitute for professional veterinary consultation.

Limitations of General Information

Every dog is an individual. General health information — even when accurate and scientifically sound — may not be appropriate for your specific dog given their age, breed, weight, existing health conditions, medications, or other individual factors. What applies to dogs in general may not apply to your dog in particular.

⚠️
Always consult your veterinarian before

Changing your dog’s diet, starting or stopping any medication, administering supplements, changing exercise routines in response to a suspected health condition, or acting on any health-related information you have read on this site.

Our Content Standards

While we take accuracy seriously — and have health-related content reviewed by qualified veterinary professionals before publication — veterinary science is a rapidly evolving field. Guidance changes. Studies are updated. What was considered best practice when an article was written may be superseded by newer evidence.

We cannot guarantee that all content on this site reflects the most current veterinary guidelines at the time you read it. We encourage you to check the publication date on articles, look for the “Last reviewed” indicator where present, and discuss any information with your own vet before acting on it.

Our Tools and Calculators

The interactive tools and calculators on SmartDogWellness — including the food calculator, BMI tool, and medication dosage guide — are designed to provide general reference estimates based on widely recognised veterinary formulas. They are educational tools, not diagnostic instruments.

💊
Medication dosage tool — important notice

Our medication dosage guide provides educational reference information only. Never administer any medication to your dog without explicit guidance from your veterinarian. Incorrect dosages can cause serious harm or death. Drug interactions, pre-existing conditions, weight fluctuations, and individual sensitivities all affect safe dosing — none of which a general tool can account for.

Symptoms Requiring Immediate Veterinary Attention

The following symptoms are veterinary emergencies. If your dog shows any of these signs, contact an emergency veterinarian immediately — do not search the internet for answers:

  • Difficulty breathing, choking, or severe laboured breathing
  • Bloated or distended abdomen, especially with distress or retching
  • Collapse or sudden inability to stand
  • Seizures or uncontrolled shaking
  • Loss of consciousness or unresponsiveness
  • Suspected poisoning or ingestion of a toxic substance
  • Severe or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Pale, blue, or grey gums
  • Inability to urinate, especially in male dogs
  • Sudden severe pain
  • Eye injury or sudden blindness
  • Snake bite or other envenomation
